2nd Contrast and Comparison Essay
9.21 done in class writing, draft for first formal essay, topic: We have read many stories about characters who love, lust, are loved, and do not love. According to Kate Chopin, relationships are about one person’s will controlling another‘s. The authors do not write to simply discuss these emotions but use them to give an insight into the sometimes strange choices of the human heart. Pick two stories; explain with proof from the texts, using direct and correctly cited quotes, what we learn about the things men and women are capable of, when in the throes of these emotions. Questions that need to be explored: Is it better to love or be loved? Is the pursuit of love always loving? When one loves is he/she always going to be controlled by the person he/she loves? (thesis)

Final draft due, beginning of class. 9.28.16. Must be typed, stapled, and double spaced. Late penalties for all papers that come in later of 20% per day, after 10.5.16 papers will no longer be accepted.
Strategy:
Think about which stories address this issue. Make a chart illustrating who is in control and whether that person is constructive, destructive, or neutral in determining the course of the relationship. You must use TWO different stories.
1st paragraph: Introduce your thesis; explain we are going to look at the consequences of relationships when one person seeks to dominate another. Introduce and your authors and titles. The relationships in different stories can be different; you will have more contrast if they are not.
2nd paragraph: Summarize the first short story with a view towards showing where the struggle for control is evident, and who is dominating, with an indication of whether it is constructive or destructive.
3rd & 4th paragraphs: Make your general statements and then support with correctly cited quotes.
5th paragraph, transition to your 2nd story, with a few comments about a few differences.
6th paragraph Summarize. Summarize the second short story with a view towards showing where the struggle for control is evident, and who is dominating, with an indication of whether it is constructive or destructive.
7th & 8th paragraphs: Make your general statements and then support with correctly cited quotes.
9th & 10th Paragraphs, conclude your essay with a view towards explaining what we have learned about the nature of man when involved in situations where he is being controlled or is controlling. What do we learn about how extreme these actions can become and the strange choices of the human heart? In these cases was destructive or beneficial?
